1) Chocolate
Chocolate contains a chemical called caffeine, which can be toxic to dogs. It is also high in sugar, which can cause life-threatening situations. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include increased heart rate, vomiting, and diarrhea. In addition to chocolate bars and candy, cocoa powder is considered toxic as well. Even small amounts of chocolate are dangerous if ingested by your dog.
2) Onions
Onion contains sulfur compounds that are poisonous to dogs. Once ingested, these compounds will cause your dog’s red blood cells to break down, which can lead to a life-threatening condition called Heinz body anemia. A few bites of onion won’t typically send your pet into immediate shock—but you should still call your vet if he starts showing signs of lethargy and weakness.
3) Grapes and Raisins
Grapes and raisins are known to cause kidney failure in dogs. What makes these two fruits more toxic than other fruit is not completely understood, but scientists believe it has something to do with their high levels of sulfites. While there haven’t been any cases of toxicity when grapes or raisins are ingested in small amounts (one or two pieces), it’s best to avoid giving your dog either of these foods altogether.
4) Macadamia Nuts
If a dog ingests macadamia nuts, it could experience weakness, depression, vomiting, and diarrhea. It can also result in muscle tremors and paralysis. If your dog has been exposed to macadamia nuts and shows signs of sickness or pain, contact your veterinarian immediately.
5) Coffee
As much as your dog may love coffee, it’s just not good for him. Coffee has a significant amount of caffeine, which can cause nervousness, excitability, and even seizures in dogs. Make sure to keep any coffee that you have out of your dog’s reach.
